JUMP! just completed a 6-week IB Diploma Leadership Program with 65 students from Dulwich College! The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation that aims to motivate students with the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world (http://www.ibo.org/general/who.cfm). With the understanding that the IB program engages students in highly intensive and rigorous curriculum, JUMP! focused on introducing resources that would make the two years of IB Diploma more manageable for students. As such, the JUMP! program provided tools for communication, trust-building, active listening, and safe risk-taking.
My favorite activity that we facilitated at Dulwich was Challenge Hat. For this activity, students are given a few minutes to write down five challenges they are currently facing and put them into a hat. Then, a facilitator chooses a challenge at random, and reads it aloud to the group. Students discuss the reason why this particular challenge is difficult for one of their peers, how to overcome it, what resources are available, and who they can trust to support them through this process. I found this activity especially enlightening because it not only highlighted the fact that many students face similar challenges, but also enabled students to anonymously voice their personal challenges and hear advice from peers whom they would not normally seek out for help.
We look forward to JUMPing at Dulwich College Beijing again soon!
