14 June 2017, BANGKOK — JUMP! Foundation and The Change School embark on a new partnership to enhance opportunities and access to experiential education. As thought leaders in global citizenship education and leadership development, both organizations aim to show the importance of experiential education and its invaluable role in education.
Experiential education is based on the concept of “learning by doing”. It immerses learners in hands-on experiences to develop awareness, skills and perspectives.
“In our philosophy of experiential education, we focus on putting students at the centre of the learning process by empowering them by choice and engaging them as the designers of the experience.” said JUMP! Executive Director Justin Bedard. “We ask them: What type of experience are you going to create for yourself? We try to release control and let their choice facilitate a powerful learning experience.”
Over the past 10 years, JUMP! has delivered leadership and global citizenship trainings to over 20,000 youth and educators around the world. It runs leadership conferences to support youth from underserved areas to tackle challenges in their personal lives and communities.
JUMP! this year is running leadership conferences across Southeast Asia. The conferences will be held in Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Yogyakarta (Indonesia), Yangon (Myanmar) and Chiang Mai (Thailand), and are expected to benefit over 200 local youth.
The Change School shares JUMP!’s vision to create learning outside the classroom. “When we experience something first-hand, we are subconsciously learning through observation, feeling, thinking and reacting. Experiential education makes learning a conscious and continuous process — through immersion, reflection, doing and improving,” said The Change School co-founder Solonia Teodros.
The Change School runs experiential learning retreats for teams and individuals in different locations in Asia-Pacific. The School creates spaces for graduates or retirees to align their values and choices on topics such as entrepreneurship, cultural competency and unlocking personal potential.
“Every experience offers valuable lessons and insights to our own attitudes, aptitudes and areas to improve. Our theory of change is that individuals need clarity of themselves and their values first to navigate through life’s challenges with confidence and resilience,” added Teodros.
