Born and raised in New York City, Mei Lum spent most of her childhood in the back kitchen of her grandparents’ Chinatown antique shop. Through her grandfather’s teachings of Chinese poetry and watching him lead different development projects in the local community, Mei became inspired to pursue her studies in Chinese language and culture as well as her passion for education and community development. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 2012 with a B.A. in East Asian Studies, Mei flew to the small quaint town of Phang-nga in southern Thailand and started her first year as a Princeton in Asia (PiA) Fellow teaching English, playing ukulele, smiling, laughing, livin’ and lovin’! Music is one of Mei’s biggest passions; wherever she is, Mei finds time to sing and play either (or all!) the tuba, guitar and ukulele. This year Mei returns to Beijing after studying Chinese at Tsinghua University in 2011 for her second year fellowship with PiA, and is so thrilled to be a part of the JUMP! team!
